Our VCS initiative has taken off quite well! With the first held on the 6th of February, a VCS class averages an attendance of 8 students and 3 volunteer tutors, out of about 25 students and 8 volunteer tutors who have signed up for VCS. Nonetheless, work to improve student and tutor yield per class, as well as commited student and volunteer recruitment, is still onoing.
VCS Classes are held on every Thursdays and Saturdays of the usual school term, from 6 pm - 7.30 pm and 9 am - 10.30 am respectively for underperforming and economically disadvantaged primary 6 students .
If you do know of any such students or altruistic individuals with the ability and commitment to teach, please let us know. We prefer nominations of students and volunteers residing in Ang Mo Kio, if not the Cheng San - Seletar Constituency.
You may email chengsanyec@ymail.com to contact the organizers of the VCS program.
We want you!
"CIP hours" will be awarded to those volunteers who are still schooling. Of course, a Volunteer Appreciation Ceremony will be planned for all our volunteers. But there are other benefits - especially those intangible ones - of volunteering for the VCS.
Playing a pivotal role in changing lives
"I learn about how education literally shapes our lives," said the 19-year-old Wan Ghee, one of our dedicated YEC members, who has volunteered her time, leadership, and knowledge each Thursday and Saturday to teach the underprivileged students, and to oversee the VCS class.
"The PSLE score of all those primary 6 students I teach will significantly affect the next 4 or even 6 years of their lives," she added. "And I take great pride in the fact that I play such a pivotal role in impacting their lives. I hope I had such a program when I was primary 6."
A way to brighten your day?
"Interacting with those students brightens my day," said Jacob Ong, Vice Chairperson of Cheng San CC YEC and Director of VCS. "They remind me of myself when I was younger. As I received unconditional help from others, I hope to pass on the kindness by running this program."
A channel to recruit new YEC members
"We are intending to invite commited and outstanding VCS volunteers into our YEC" said Derrick Tang, Chairperson of Cheng San CC YEC. "They can then plan community events and programs like the VCS."
